If there are so many different martial arts originating from Japan, Korea, Okinawa, etc., why choose kung fu? There are many great reasons people choose kung fu but here are a few of our favorites.

  1. All the famous strength building programs are associated with kung fu. You do not have any of the exotic strength developing programs (chi building, iron palm, iron vest, etc) in any of the other martial arts. Everything else is just hard style external exercises just like calisthenics, supplementary weight lifting or any physical fitness program. Other martial arts do not have real methods on building real strength and power which will give a small man or woman the strength of a much bigger man without altering their physical size or weight.
  2. There is tremendous variety in training. There is always something new to learn regardless of your rank level. All other martial arts have limited amounts of material to offer and usually ends shortly after getting your black belt. In kung fu you can keep learning way beyond your black sash years. As long as you can keep training you will always have the ability to learn something new.
  3. Kung fu has unlimited weapon work. The other martial arts are extremely limited to when it comes to weapon work (usually offering only one or two). There are 72 classical weapons (36 long and 36 short) in the Chinese systems as well as a host of exotic weapons that do not fall in those categories.
  4. Kung fu is older and much more developed, dating back some 3000 years in comparison to the other martial arts that only date back a little over a hundred years. This makes it more interesting, sophisticated and in depth.
  5. Kung fu follows the natural movement of the body, making it fascinating to learn, use and understand. It also follows the princplis and philosophy of the concepts of the yin yang which allows us to develop ourselves, making kung fu an education like no other
  6. Kung fu is a study of a life time and can be practiced into your later years. The other martial arts rely on the strength of the physical body, so as you age it gets harder and harder to keep training. There are many people today still practicing kung fu into their late 80's and 90's.

Although all martial arts have something good to offer, kung fu has a larger diversity and variety. If it is true what they say "variety is the spice of life" then kung fu offers us the spice of life that keeps us going, feeling young and vibrant.
